Reflecting on the past decade, it's heartening to see how far we've come since our partnership with Mukunike Primary School in Kangundo. In April 2014, we embarked on a journey with the community that has since blossomed into something remarkable. It began with a simple yet impactful goal: to contribute to the well-being of the students and the environment.

When we first engaged the local community—many of whom are parents of the children attending the school—in tree planting activities, it became clear that our work could have a deeper impact. That’s when Green Earthing decided to focus directly on the children of Mukunike village.During our visits, it became evident that the school not only needed an uplift in infrastructure but also required support in nutrition. The school’s kitchen was a small, worn-out structure serving over 300 students daily.

Seeing it in person was a stark reminder of the challenges rural schools face, especially those heavily reliant on government support. The classrooms, too, were in poor condition, with missing windows and doors, making learning during the rainy season nearly impossible.Under the Greening and School Feeding Program, we set out to make a lasting change.

Within a short span of time, we completed a new kitchen for Mukunike Primary, complete with a fireplace and a store, ensuring that the students could enjoy warm, nutritious meals.

In tandem, we empowered each child to take responsibility for the environment by planting and caring for their very own Moringa Oleifera tree. Moringa, known for its nutritional benefits, was the perfect choice to boost both the school’s environment and the children’s diets.

Over 400 Moringa trees were donated, and each student received a tree to plant either at school or at home. It’s incredible to look back now and see the impact this has had—not just on the school’s infrastructure, but on the children’s connection to the environment and their future. The newly completed kitchen stands as a testament to the power of community action and the transformative potential of environmental stewardship. As we celebrate this 10-year milestone, we look forward to continuing our work with the children and the community of Kangundo, nurturing both young minds and the environment.
